A domain transfer is, in effect, the process which transfers a domain name from the management under one registrar to another registrar. As a registrar is only responsible for the management of your domain records, this transfer should in no way affect your website, relevant email or DNS.

Often a domain transfer can be troublesome if your current registrar refuses to release the domain or has placed a "lock" on the domain to prevent it's transfer. The domain is legally yours, so unless there is an outstanding payment issue, they are obliged to "unlock" the domain and/or accept any transfer requests sent to them, as long as you notify them that it is what you have requested.
